Ontario Increasing Oversight and Protection for Marine Mammals: Press Release

Welcome to PIJAC Canada's Member Industry Press Release page.

OSPCA News Release
Ontario - May 28, 2015: Today the province passed the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Amendment Act, which will prohibit the acquisition and breeding of orcas (killer whales) in Ontario effective immediately.

To ensure the province continues to have the strongest animal protection legislation in Canada, the bill contains a number of other measures to improve the oversight and well-being of all marine mammals in Ontario. This includes:

Rules that allow the government to require animal welfare committees at any facility that houses marine mammals Rules that allow the government to require facilities that house marine mammals to have qualified veterinarians with expertise in marine mammal medicine to oversee preventive and clinical care Penalties of up to $60,000 and/or two years in prison on first conviction for breaches of the Act The province is also working on setting specific standards of care for marine mammals which will reflect advice from an expert report by Dr. David Rosen, a University of British Columbia marine biologist, and recommendations from a technical advisory group. When introduced, Ontario will be the first jurisdiction in Canada to set specific standards of care for marine mammals.

The amendments complete a three-point plan initiated in October 2012 to strengthen protection for all animals.

Canada's Success at Zoomark 2015

In the time following Zoomark 2015, team Canada companies have been quickly following up with contacts made in Italy, solidifying distribution deals that reach around the globe. Zoomark may be smaller in stature to its behemoth counterpart Interzoo, but it is no less lucrative.  In a relaxed business atmosphere, seven member companies engaged in four solid days of commerce, introducing Europe, Asia and South America to the quality Canadian companies offer.

"We received a tonne of exposure and were able to introduce our products to a large number of distributors from many different countries.  It was a resounding success."
Joe Crump, Crumps' Naturals

The pavilion structure was set up as an island with our business centre situated in the middle ensuring easy access for visitors and allowing us to effectively cater to the needs of our exhibitors which included translation services, supplies, meeting room availability, and refreshments.  Not having been to this particular event before I was very happy to see how consistently busy our members were.  Here, exhibitors were working in a smaller space, selling to an international market, quite different than the larger display space and Canadian clientele they see at one of our domestic shows.  It was impressive to observe their agility in adjusting sales pitches and deftly engage non English or French speaking prospects, sometimes with the help of our pavilion translator Alessio and sometime without.  Having watched these members grow over the years it is infinitely satisfying for us to see them succeeding the world stage.

"Right off the bat this show was good for us as it offered a strong European centre to showcase our products and it opened up many new distribution opportunities for us."
Roxanne Pettipaw, Buddy Belts/Multi-Collars

The tagline we use for the Canadian pavilion is "Quality is in our nature."  It's not just a platitude, it's truth.  When I began to inquire as to why companies were drawn to visit the Canadians, Canadian quality was the answer each time.  Trust is built into the Canadian brand and it is what was drawing the distributors to visit our exhibitors.  Being together in one location made it an easy stop for them.  Our structure was smaller than the American and UK pavilions, but everyone knew where to find us and frankly, with all that lovely red and white, we were quite easy to spot.  Exactly what's needed at a big international show.

On the PIJAC Canada front we were happy to play host to our association colleagues from the UK, Brazil, Russia, Europe and the Netherlands. We also appreciated a visit from Eric Robinson who traveled to see us from the Canadian Embassy in Rome. For us Zoomark is an important meeting arena for global contemporaries to meet, sharing resources and technology as we regularly face similar legislative and industry challenges.

We are very proud of what everyone was able to achieve at Zoomark this year and extend our congratulations to all our exhibitors on the exemplary job they did for their companies and representing Canada.  On behalf of our entire team we would also like to thank Agriculture and Agrifood Canada for their assistance in making this happen and being an integral part of the success.

Joe Crump, Crumps' Naturals

Roxanne Pettipaw, Buddy Belts / Multi Collars

Join the Award Winning No Hot Pets Campaign!

AWARD WINNING CAMPAIGN
FREE MARKETING MATERIAL
INSPIRE YOUR COMMUNITY

PIJAC Canada is once again supporting the "No Hot Pets" Campaign put on by the Ontario SPCA provincial headquarters. This award winning campaign was a tremendous success last year with 20 million online impressions and close to 12,000 people taking the online pledge.

The program will be offering free marketing materials for you to print and use to engage your clients about the dangers of pets in hot cars.  This initiative is from Ontario but is available for any business across the country.  "No Hot Pets" is an free and easy way to show your community how much you care about pets.

Give some thought to how this campaign can compliment your existing responsible pet ownership education efforts.  We will be in touch as soon as the marketing materials have been uploaded next week.

Here is an invitation and campaign summary from the OSPCA:
We would like to invite your company to join the award winning national No Hot Pets Campaign for 2015 and help create a stronger voice for the animals. The campaign will run from May 19 – August 31, 2015.

The issue of owners leaving their pets in their vehicles during the hot summer months is a constant problem. Hundreds of reports are received daily, putting animals’ safety at risk and even in some cases, causing death.

The 2014 No Hot Pets campaign was a HUGE SUCCESS, with over 20 million online impressions and close to 12,000 people taking the online pledge. We expect this year’s campaign to be even bigger!

Why you should join:
  • as a partner, support the Ontario SPCA in one of our major public awareness campaigns, helping us save more animals’ lives this summer.

  • campaign runs for 3.5 months and last year reached over 20 million online impressions. That’s excellent exposure for your company!

  • your company name would appear on the NHP website FOR FREE (further name and logo recognition opportunities are available through sponsorship)

  • you will have access to FREE No Hot Pets marketing materials to use within your network. Print them out, hand them out, post on social media, spread the word!
We would love your assistance in helping us share this important message and look forward to working together to promote the dangers of hot pets in vehicles this summer. Please let me know if we can count you in.

Thank you.

Wild Western Pet Expo Round-up

When it comes to our shows, expansion is exactly what we want to see.  Bigger and better than ever, the Western Pet Expo added 20% more exhibitors to meet demand of our visitors.  According to the crowd, it was the show special that brought them through the door and had them exploring the aisles.

With a significant percentage of products in our industry being dedicated to nutrition, it was no surprise to see the success of the Animal Nutrition workshop, presented by Serge Boutet.  The presentation discussed cat and dog food development, nutritional philosophy and composition (what are each ingredient included for) and how private brands compare.

Despite the size of the province, one of the amazing things about the Western Pet Expo is the community feel, as the exhibitors greet long-time customers and welcome new ones.   "The main reason we like these shows is the meet and greet part with our customers. Many times we sell to stores and build great relationships over the phone and email but never get a chance to see them face to face. That is by far (in my personal opinion) the best reason to attend and reason we do them." says Jamie Gagnon, President of the Little Fish Company. Visitors clearly agreed, as they took a break from the perfect weather to meet with close to 80 exhibitors.

Not to be outdone by the Calgary Show on the 26th, voting in the Best New Product competition was prolific.  The official winner will be announced via social media later this week.

As our domestic trade show team finishes up with our spring series and our international team heads to Italy for Zoomark this week, the PIJAC Canada staff will shortly be gearing up for ExpoZoo in its new Drummondville location, August 23 and 24, as well as, the National Pet Industry Show, September 20 - 21.
