Announcing New Retailer Award in Canada

April 4, 2017 (Ottawa, ON) - PIJAC Canada is excited to announce the first ever Animal Welfare is Everyone's Business tm – Retail Award (Western).   This award will highlight the work of dedicated and passionate pet retail businesses in the areas of animal well-being and the promotion of responsible pet ownership.  Our goal for this award is to publicly shine a light on the efforts of the amazing people in our industry and to inspire others to follow in their footsteps.

Award Criteria:

1.       Must be a pet specialty retailer in  one of the following provinces, BC, AB, SK, MB or Territories

2.       Must be a brick and mortar location

3.        Promotes responsible pet ownership in the store and community ie - Take home information packages, after-sale care program, care workshops, school visits, etc.

4.       Supports pet & pet families in the community ie - pet food bank, raising awareness of issues impacting pets in the community, assisting other animal organizations, etc.

5.       Any other general community support activities

Here’s how it works:

1.       Manufacturers and Distributors can submit the nominations online to PIJAC Canada by May 1^st.

2.       Successful nominees will be announced May 9^th.

3.       Online voting will be open May 9 - 23.  PIJAC Canada members, pre-registered show visitors and Western Cdn. Pet Industry Trade Show exhibitors will be eligible to vote.

The winner will be announced during the Fundraising Gala at the Western Canadian Pet Industry Trade Show the evening of June 4^th. 

What about the rest of the country?!

This is our first time giving an award like this so we are starting small and building up.  Once the Western show has been completed keep watch for details on when nominations will open for the awards at ExpoZoo and the National Pet Industry Trade Show.  There are plans in the works to expand the Animal Welfare is Everyone’s Business Award in 2018 to pet services, manufacturers and distributors.

Annonce du tout nouveau Prix du détaillant canadien

4 avril 2017 (Ottawa, ON) – C’est avec enthousiasme que PIJAC Canada annonce le tout premier Prix du détaillant « Le bien-être animal, c’est l’affaire detous»MD pour l’Ouest canadien. Ce prix souligne le travail des animaleries et compagnies détaillantes à la fois dédiées et passionnées et particulièrement engagées envers le bien-être des animaux et la promotion de la garde responsable d'animaux de compagnie. Notre objectif, en offrant ce prix, est de rendre publics les efforts de personnes extraordinaires de notre industrie et d’en inspirer d’autres à suivre la même voie.

Critères de sélection:

1.    Être un détaillant spécialisé dans les animaux de compagnie dans l’une des provinces   suivantes, soit  CB., AB, SK, MB, ou l’un ou l’autre des Territoires canadiens

2.    Avoir un emplacement physique.

3.    Promouvoir la garde responsable des animaux dans le magasin et au sein de la communauté, en fournissant par exemple des trousses d’information que les clients peuvent ramener à la maison, des programmes de soins après-vente, des ateliers de soins, des visites scolaires, etc.

4.    Soutenir les familles propriétaires d’animaux de ciompagnie dans la communauté, notamment en aidant une banque alimentaire pour animaux de compagnie, en faisant des campagnes de sensibilisation sur les problèmes qui touchent les animaux de compagnie, en appuyant d’autres organisations animales, etc.

5.    Toute autre activité générale de soutien communautaire.

Voici comment cela fonctionne:

1.    Nous enverrons un lien au formulaire de candidature en ligne aux membres fabricants et distributeurs. Les nominations doivent être complétées d’ici le 1^er mai.

2.    Les candidats retenus seront annoncés le 9 mai.

3.    Le vote en ligne sera ouvert du 9 au 23 mai et les membres de PIJAC Canada, les visiteurs préinscrits au Salon et les canadiens de l’Ouest du pays pourront y participer. Les exposants du Western Canadian Pet Industry Trade Show pourront également voter.

Le gagnant sera annoncé lors du gala de collecte de fonds du Western Canadian Pet Industry Trade Show le 4 juin en soirée.  Suivez-nous sur notre page Facebook ou #AWIEB. 

Qu’en est-il du reste du pays? 
C’est la première fois que nous accordons un tel prix. Ainsi, nous préférons commencer à plus petite échelle et prendre de l’ampleur peu à peu. Une fois le Salon de l’Ouest terminé, soyez aux aguets : plus de détails seront dévoilés concernant l’ouverture des mises en candidature pour les prix qui seront offerts à ExpoZoo et au Salon national de l’industrie desanimaux de compagnie. En 2018, nous planifions étendre le prix « Le bien-être animal, c’est l’affaire de tous»TM aux fournisseurs de services, ainsi qu’aux fabricants et aux distributeurs.

Innovative OSPCA Software Launch - Healthier Pet Environments

New online tool launched by the Ontario SPCA to create a healthier environment at shelters, kennels and pet events

Stouffville, ON (October 18, 2016) – The OntarioSPCA has launched a new online resource to equip animal shelter staff, volunteers and veterinary care providers with information and tips to make animals more comfortable and provide a humane and healthy environment.

While designed specifically for animal shelter staff, volunteers and veterinary care providers, the information available on the new shelterhealthpro.com website is applicable to anyone responsible for housing a large group of animals. This includes breeders, kennel operators and event organizers, such as those hosting dog shows and pet expos.

 

“The goal of the website is to save lives with the most current best practices for improving animal health and welfare through effective management strategies, protocols and resources for infection and disease prevention and control,” says Dr. Magdalena Smrdelj, Chief Veterinary Officer, Ontario SPCA.  

The Infection and Disease Control section of shelterhealthpro.com features up-to-date information gathered from shelter medicine experts on critical topics like intake procedures, personal protective equipment, cleaning and disinfection, zoonotic diseases and infection control. Easy-to-understand icons highlight and group subject matter to make the site more easily navigated by the user.

Previously, shelter health resources were available through the Ontario SPCA as a printed manual. However, shelter medicine is continually evolving with new research and recommendations and, as a result, the manual quickly became outdated.

“We invite shelter health professionals and anyone who works with large groups of animals to visit shelterhealthpro.com to review best practices when it comes to infection and disease prevention and control,” says Smrdelj. “The latest information that can help safeguard the animals in your care is now just a click away.”

Coming soon is a second phase of the website covering Environmental Needs and Behavioural Health.

Pitbull Ban - Businesses, Vets, SPCA's, Breeders, Rescues all standing together

By now most people have heard that the Montreal SPCA has launch a lawsuit against the City of Montreal regarding the new Breed Specific Bylaw targeting pitbulls.  A bylaw based on misinformation and fear.  During the summer of 2016, at the request of the provincially appointed dangerous dogs working group, we provided our position, advising strongly against a breed specific bylaw due to its ineffectiveness in ensuring public safety. In the end, despite consultation with PIJAC Canada, SPCAs, the veterinary community and many other municipalities and organizations the city of Montreal has decided to go ahead with a ban on pitbull/pitbull-type dogs. Instead of embracing scientific evidence and existing data the city has chosen to support breed specific legislation, when all the expertise points to the contrary. Throughout this debate the Montreal SPCA has done a phenomenal job working to educate their citizens about the myths surrounding pitbulls and the reality of dangerous dogs.  Despite everyone's best efforts, the mayor and a majority of council made a decision that will end up putting in danger the lives of hundreds of perfectly good dogs.

Punishing responsible pet families takes focus and resources away from addressing the real issue which is public safety, something all sides agree on.  We have offered our assistance to the Montreal SPCA, had a meeting of the National Companion Animal Coalition (CVMA, CKC, CFHS, PIJAC Canada) and corresponded with many other organizations across the country on this issue. Everyone is in agreement that we will continue working to change the outcome.

L’interdiction des pitbulls – Entreprises, vétérinaires, SPCAs, Éleveurs et Refuges, s’unissent

Par maintenant la plupart des gens ont entendu parlé de la poursuite judiciaire qu’a lancé la SPCA de Montréal contre la ville de Montréal par rapport à Loi sur l’interdication des races ciblant les pitbulls. Un règlement basé sur la désinformation et la peur. Cet été, à la demande du groupe de travail sur les chiens dangereux nommé par la province, nous avons fait part de notre position, déconseillant fortement une interdication de races en raison de son inefficacité à assurer la sécurité publique.  En bout de ligne, malgré la consultation avec PIJAC Canada, les SPCAs, la communauté vétérinaire et plusieurs autres organisations, la ville de Montréal a décidé d’aller de l’avant avec l’interdiction des chiens de types pitbulls.  Au lieu d’accepter les preuves scientifiques et les données existantes, la ville a choisi de se donner un tel règlement, lorsque toute expertise pointe au contraire. Au travers ce débat, la SPCA de Montréal a fait un travail phénoménal en éduquant les citoyens au sujet des mythes qui entourent les pitbulls et la réalité des chiens dangereux. Malgré ces efforts, le maire et la majorité des conseillers ont pris une décision qui mettra en danger la vie de plusieurs centaines de chiens innocents.

Pénaliser les familles responsables d’animaux de compagnie éloigne le focus et les ressources pour adresser le vrai problème de la sécurité publique, ce dont tout le monde est d’accord. Nous avons offert notre aide à la SPCA de Montréal, en plus d’une rencontre avec la Coalition nationale pour les animauxde compagnie (ACMV, CCC, FSCAA, PIJAC Canada) et nous avons également communiqué avec plusieurs organisations à travers le pays à ce sujet. Tout le monde est d’avis de continuer de travailler ensemble pour changer le résultat de ce dossier.

SPCA de l'Outaouais reçoit le Sheltering Summit 2015

Sheltering Summit reconnaît les organisations qui ont amélioré les soins et le traitement des animaux en transition (le rétablissement, les interventions, le transfert).

Cette année, la SPCAO a été reconnue pour son taux d'adoption exceptionnel, obtenu grâce à ses initiatives internes et externes, ses partenariats, ainsi que grâce à sa collaboration avec d'autres agences, dans le but d'améliorer le bien-être des animaux de compagnie, sur une plus grande échelle.

Immediate Temporary Moratorium Recommended on Importation of Firebelly and Paddletail Newts

PIJAC Canada supports PIJAC USA’s recommendation for an immediate temporary moratorium on the importation of Firebelly and Paddletail newts 

 Cynops orientalis (Firebelly) and Pachytriton labiatus (Paddletail) 

In late November PIJAC (USA) released a statement recommending a temporary halt on the importation of Firebell and Paddletail newts, effective immediately. The reason for the moratorium stems from concerns over the Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans, or Bsal, fungus.  This fungus, which is native to Asia, has impacted fire salamander populations in Belgium and the Netherlands.   

In an proactive effort to protect native Canadian newt populations, PIJAC Canada’s Board of Directors is supporting PIJAC USA’s recommendation. This decision is directly in line with the criteria found in PIJAC Canada's Exotic Animal Policy.

Even if harvested sustainably in the counties of origin, the risk is too high to our native species and potentially endangers contamination of existing, thriving captive amphibian communities.  Should such a pathogen be introduced to Canada, we fear that it could result in a ban, meaning the end of responsible ownership of these animals entirely. We ask you to remind your customers that pets should never be released into the wild.

2015 Canadian Pet Retail Award Winner

Congratulations to all the winners and the nominees of 2015 Summit Awards.  Despite some unexpected hiccups this year regarding the Summit conference, the organizers have worked tirelessly to ensure the 2015 Summit Awards are announced and due recognition given to the winners.

The Lifetime Achievement Summit Award recognizes an individual whose achievements has garnered the honor and respect of their peers in the Alliance for Urban Animals.  And the winner is... James H. Bandow

La Grande Ménagerie, Sherbrooke QC

The goal of La Grande Ménagerie every day is to educate pet families, helping them to make good choices and solid commitments to the animals in their care. As such they have been directly involved in the education of the population for animal welfare for many years.

New Homes for Pets Through Collaboration: They refer clients directly to shelters in the surrounding area and have connected the community with pets through collaborative adoption efforts over the last 15 years. Kittens are always sterilized and vaccinated, to improve well-being, and also be sure they do not contribute unexpected litters.

La Grande Menagerie organizes weekend adoptions by lending their store to shelters, so they have space to engage the public and find homes for the shelter animals. For example, recently, they assisted the Refuge Caramel Foundation to help find families for a considerable number of cats brought to the shelter.

They regularly support the Eastern Townships SPA and other rescues by offering corporate gift certificates that they use to promote adoptions, by sending them gifts of food and toys and organizing fundraisers for them.

Public Education: La Grande Menagerie has some special exotic pets in their care which are their community ambassadors of education. These ambassadors include birds and turtles and reptiles which were surrendered by their families. They help to demonstrate the long term commitment involved as well as, special nutritional and habitat needs in caring for these species. They help illustrate to families what it takes to properly care for these animals and why they can make great companions. The staff team regularly offers tours, in which they explain more about the care and needs of animals to children, allowing them to get in touch with them in a respectful way.  They also engage children by making presentations in local schools or during event days.
