FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 14, Vancouver, BC - Pets are an oft-overlooked aspect of Canada’s past and present. From Sir John A. Macdonald and Lord Dufferin to Justin Trudeau and David Johnston, we are told about the people who provide leadership to our country, but not much about their pets. As Canada prepares to celebrate two important milestones next year, the sesquicentennial of Confederation on July 1st, and the centennial of the Battle of Vimy Ridge next April, it is possible to find snippets of images and tales of the animals who meant much to the Prime Ministers and other prominent people who presided over the evolution of Canada from colony to nation.

Yet
King was not alone during his time as an admirer of the canine, nor the only
Prime Minister to have more than one of the same name. John Diefenbaker would acquire more than one
dog named ‘Happy’. Robert Borden and Joe
Clark had dogs named ‘Taffy’ (one was a St. Bernard, and the other a Great
Dane).
